Production designer Jon Henson recently turned to Painting Practice to help visualise a little Sci Fi psychedelia for director Edouard Salier’s new and fantastic music video for, the very cool sounding, Metronomy. For those of you that know the bands work and appreciate their eclectic sound you’ll more than understand Salier’s fantastical approach! Taking reference from various sources in sci fi history, the visual development artists at Painting Practice worked very closely with Jon and Edouard and produced designs for both the featured spaceship and it’s cockpit interior.

It was a relatively short turnaround which was necessary to get the designs to the model shop, yes model shop! Edouard wanted to use traditional cinematic methods of visual effects rather than produce a CG space ship, so although executed in 3D for visual purposes the ship itself was constructed by Painting Practice’s good friends at Evolution. The cockpit was built to real scale by another favourite of ours Leigh Took at Mattes & Miniatures.

The model of the ship itself, built by Leigh Took, was created to about 1m in length. See a few angles below.A ┬áconcept and drawings for the full scale cockpit set below…
