Painting Practice are currently looking for an Assistant VFX Art Director to join our team in Cardiff, Wales. The project is a high-end TV adaptation of a best-selling book series, with innovative and complex design & VFX components.


– Experience working as an assistant art director and/or draftsperson in film/tv.
– Strong understanding of modelling to scale and modelling/drafting for construction.
– Comfortable working in photoshop and indesign.
– Strong problem solving and presentation skills.
– Strong skills in 3D modelling software applications. Cinema 4D and Zbrush are our preferred softwares.
– Basic knowledge of cameras, lenses and good 3D composition and lighting skills.
– Ability to model to different technical requirements and styles. E.g. Low poly modelling for pre-vis and VR, Kit bashing and high poly modelling for concept art.

Desirable skills

– Experience shooting and processing Photogramettry.
– Experience using Agisoft photoscan.

Fantastic News, Black Mirror fans!

Black Mirror’s San Junipero won two Emmys for both ‘Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special’, AND ‘Outstanding Television Movie’.

A huge congratulations go to; Charlie Brooker, Annabel Jones, Laurie Borg, and director Owen Harris for creating such an incredible episode, and making working on it so much fun.

‘Back in the 80’s I began to train as a fine artist. Before I started that degree, I made a little book of cartoon illustrations. Somebody took that book to an animator and they offered me a job on an unknown project called “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”, incredibly I turned it down, saying that I wanted to be a fine artist! Of course, as we all know, it turned out to be a seminal live action animation movie and when I saw the finished thing I knew I wanted to work in film.’ Joel Collins, Black Mirror Series Designer
